What Is Ipe Deck Refinishing?
Ipe deck refinishing is the process of applying a fresh coat of professional-grade penetrating hardwood oil to a properly prepared Ipe deck. It is not the same as restoration. Refinishing is appropriate when the deck surface is structurally sound and the wood is beginning to gray or lose its finish — but does not yet require sanding, corrective work, or removal of a failed previous treatment. Choosing the right service for your deck's actual condition saves time and money.
The key word is penetrating. Ipe requires oils that soak into the wood rather than forming a film on the surface. Film-forming products — paints, solid stains, and most standard deck sealers — do not adhere properly to Ipe's dense, oily surface and will peel within months. Professional refinishing uses the right products applied correctly to a properly cleaned and brightened surface.

Surface Assessment

Cleaning & Brightening
The deck is cleaned with appropriate wood cleaners to remove dirt, mildew, and surface oxidation. Brighteners are applied to restore the wood's natural pH and open the grain for maximum oil penetration. This step is not optional — oil applied to an uncleaned surface will not penetrate properly.
Oil Application
Professional-grade penetrating hardwood oil is applied in controlled coats, allowing the wood to absorb each application before the next is added. Excess oil is removed to prevent surface buildup, which can become tacky and attract dirt.
Cure Time & Guidance
The deck requires drying time before use. We provide specific guidance based on the product used and current weather conditions, and we recommend a maintenance schedule appropriate for your deck's location and exposure.
Why Product Choice Matters
Not all hardwood oils perform equally in South Florida's climate. We use professional-grade products specifically formulated for dense tropical hardwoods — Ipe, Cumaru, Garapa, and Tigerwood — and tested in high-UV, high-humidity environments. Consumer-grade products from hardware stores are typically formulated for softer, more porous wood species and will not penetrate or protect Ipe effectively.
